Roller coaster inversions explained on Achtbaan

Achtbaan published a guide to roller coaster inversions: what counts as one, how each element feels, and which coasters turn riders upside down the most.

Achtbaan has published a new guide that explains roller coaster inversions, the number on every coaster page that first-time riders tend to worry about most.

The guide sets out what counts as an inversion and what does not, such as overbanked turns, and walks through the common elements one by one: the vertical loop and why modern loops are teardrop shaped, the corkscrew, zero-g and heartline rolls, the Immelmann and dive loop, and two-inversion elements such as the cobra roll.

A table drawn from Achtbaan's catalogue lists the operating coasters with the most inversions, led by The Smiler at Alton Towers and Eejanaika at Fuji-Q Highland with 14 each, with Colossus, Dragon Khan and four rides with seven inversions behind them. The guide also explains why more inversions do not always make a more intense ride, gives tips for riding them comfortably, and notes that more than half of the coasters in the catalogue never turn riders upside down.
